Amelia Earhart was the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic. On the side of her aircraft she painted the following words:
"Always think with your stick forward"
This to me means that you must always be moving forwards. Always striving towards a new goal.
Many philosophers and theorists suggest that having goals and working towards them provides a great way to maintain happiness in life. It is believed that the human element of our mind desires us to have a purpose, which is why when we don't feel like we have a purpose we can begin to feel lost or unhappy about life.
"The seventh key is that you must have a major definite purpose for your life. You must have one goal that, if you accomplish it, can do more to help you improve your life than any other single goal."
I can attest that in my life goals have provided me a way to keep a healthy and happy state of mind. My cheesy and philosophical approach to life has not been brought about by easy times, but rather from having adversities to overcome. It would at times have been very easy for me to wallow in self pity and allow my woes to consume me and bring me down. But I realised early on that life is a gift and I have always strived to make the most of life and enjoy it as much as possible! Hence my mantra 'Live life, love life!' I am certain that having goals in my work and personal life have helped me live a life I am incredibly proud of and more than happy with 😊
"As people enable themselves to achieve one or two goals for the year that are most meaningful, they will find power, peace of mind, and confidence in their abilities because they have achieved what they set out to accomplish. Your commitment to achieving what matters most will become the foundation for tremendous accomplishments and contributions. You will become the change you seek to make."
In terms of health and fitness, I think it is important to have a fitness or active goal. It could be to lift a certain weight, to run a certain distance, to compete in a particular event or to go on an active adventure, for example to walk the Great Wall of China!
If you have an active or fitness goal, leading a healthy lifestyle becomes so much easier to maintain and is more rewarding. Motivation is not the tool that makes me stay active every day. Dedication to pursuing goals and seeing how far I can develop my body is what makes me train consistently.
And once one goal has been achieved, you must set a new one. The human mind craves purpose and challenge and so providing it with just that helps to keep your mind and body both on an even keel!
"People with goals succeed because they know where they’re going."
